Ta Da!

Here it is, my Hoffman Challenge entry. It is a dress that I draped from an original design. Everything came out better than I had hoped and I can't wait for the results of the judging next month. To everyone else that is competing, good luck:)

Back in the swing of things

Just the inspiration I needed to get back into my rhythm. The Hoffman Challenge for 2009. This is the first year that I will be competing and I'm very excited. I have been working on my project for the garment competition for a few months now and I'm in the home stretch. It is an original design and is coming together nicely. The skirt lining, a zipper and a hook and eye is all that I have left to do, and I can't forget about all the neat appliques that I'm going to be doing. I'm hoping that I can put in a few hours here and there and be done in a few weeks. The fabric for this year's challenge is a very nice green, brown and gold paisley print. Oh how I love paisley prints! I'm not going to divulge any details of my garment until it gets a little closer to the submition date.

And it isn't even winter yet

Winter technically starts tomorrow but we have received at least 6 inches of snow today and 4 to 6 inches are still expected for tonight. I've made my list of sewing projects, checked some off and now I'm just hoping that the power doesn't go out so I can make some more progress. Freezing rain starts tomorrow and then we slowly warm up around Christmas Day.

The agenda for tonight...

Coloring book covers and cutting out some patterns.

Wait... It's Decemeber?

Like many of you out there I'm feeling the crunch of last minute Christmas gifts. Well, I'll be honest, I haven't really started on them. That new position at work that I wrote about a few months ago, it came with a lot more, shall I say, unwanted 'extras'. A few of the little extras include being told that when I write time I must leave the colons out so time reads as 1200 or 145. Because it takes way too much time to write them in. Another one is that I have to wear lipstick to work, isn't there a law against that or something?

Anyways... sewing!

Projects include-

Three pillow covers

Two other pillow covers

Three coloring book covers with crayon pockets

One hat

Two quick quilts

Five tapestry projects

One sweatshirt

One vest

Two passport holders

And other gifts that I'm sure I'm forgetting.

We got 5 inches of snow today! That might not be a lot for some parts of the country but we are at about 50 feet above sea level so it's kinda big right now. The temps are in the teens and all the roads have iced over so i'll be stuck inside for a few days and will be able to knock out some of these projects. (fingers crossed)

Thanks ODOT workers!!

So what am I doing sitting here? I've got work to do.

One more accomplishment

It's been a while since my last post. I was able to get my camera to work and now I am able to post some pictures of my projects and items that are for sale in my etsy store. I currently have two scarves in my store with plans for more things on the way.

I am training for a new position at work so I have been very busy and a little stressed. Sewing has been my sanity lately and lucky for me, I've had plenty to work on. I have a birthday gift that I'm working on but wont post a picture of it until the birthday has passed. No spoiler's here.
The picture to the right is of one of my scarves that I have in my etsy store. I'm just starting out with my store and hope to be able to add to it soon.

Working on a day off...

Although I have had the past two days off from work, it sure hasn't felt like down time. Waking up a little later (it is a non work day) was followed very closely with finishing up two scarves made from 100% wool and starting a purse. It is the 'La Rue' bag from HotPatterns featured in The Devil Wears Prada. I am adjusting the pattern a bit and will post a picture after I have finished. I am having camera 'issues' and haven't been able to upload any photos.

I am very inspired by movies and really enjoy taking existing designer pieces and trying to duplicate them as close as possible with the least amount of money without sacrificing the design.

What movies inspire you to create?

Today is the Day!

Because this is my first posting I would like to introduce myself. My name is Emily and I am a recent college graduate. I have a degree in fashion design with hopes of putting my stamp on the industry.

'Today is the Day!' because I have finally started my blog to allow people to follow me as I work to achieve my goals. I have freelance projects that I am working on and they will be showcased here, as well as starting a clothing line called Dandy Clothing, with an emphasis on local materials and sustainability.

My current project is making aprons for a holiday bizaar that is coming up in late November. I am making three different types of aprons, full aprons, half aprons and hostess aprons. I will be posting pictures of them in the coming days.

All for now...
